The Pocket Gamer Awards 2014: Winners announced

'Three' may be a magic number, but not even David Blaine can conjure up the magnificence of winning a trio of Pocket Gamer Awards.

And, yet, that's exactly what Rovio Stars, Gameloft, and Nintendo did while the whole of Europe slept.

Voted for by PG's readership (in unprecedented numbers, I might add), the recipients of the Pocket Gamer Awards 2014 were announced over in splendid San Francisco at a splendiferous event last night (made possible, we ought to say, by sponsors Chukong Technologies and Kamcord).

Copenhagen-based Playdead kicked proceedings off by picking up Best Action / Arcade Game for its stylishly macabre Limbo.

Nintendo's representatives were then up on stage collecting the first of their prestigious trilogy: Best Adventure / RPG for the fabulous Fire Emblem: Awakening.

This was later followed by a 3DS Game of the Year award for The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, and the inarguable trophy for Best Publisher.

In between those moments, Gameloft's high-octane blast Asphalt 8: Airborne swerved in and took the Best Sports / Driving Game, Android Game of the Year, and Windows Phone Game of the Year awards for a spin.

Not to be outdone, the Nitrome-developed and Rovio Stars-published Icebreaker: A Viking Voyage also raided the PG Awards to take three prizes home: Best Casual / Puzzle Game, iOS Game of the Year, and the big one, Overall Game of the Year.

That still left room for others to be recognised by the PG voters, of course.

The tremendously tactical XCOM: Enemy Unknown, the dazzingly delightful Tearaway, the marvellously Minecraft-y Terraria, and awesome adventurer Telltale Games also walked away winners.
