[Update] Traps n' Gemstones is a cute Metroidvania for iOS and Android, from Donut Games
Spelunkin' (Updated: Also on Android and Windows 8)
If there's one genre that the App Store needs more of, it's Metroidvania games.
These give you huge labyrinthine worlds to explore at your leisure, with backtracking, discovery, and secret areas.
Luckily, we've now got Traps n' Gemstones, from Traffic Rush and Sunday Lawn developer Donut Games.
This new adventure puts you in the dusty shoes of a freelance archaeologist, who is tasked with excavating a massive maze-like pyramid. He starts empty handed, but soon builds up an inventory of handy items, weapons, and tools.
There are loads of chambers to explore, secret rooms to find, relics to uncover, and new mechanics to master. You'll also find mine carts, undead skeleton warriors, and underwater lakes.
The game supports the ION Arcade Controller, but sadly not those spiffy new MFI pads.
I've only just started to dig into Traps n' Gemstones, but its already a fun and charming little game with lots to do, loads of achievements to collect, and responsive controls. We'll have a full review soon.
If you can't wait, you can get it now for £1.99 / $2.99 as a 40 percent off launch sale for the rest of July. And there are no in-app purchases to be found. "Buy the game, get everything," says Donut.
