Hero Tale is unlike many other mobile role-playing games you have probably played, and if not for the fact that it starts out extremely slow, then for the fact that you have an incremental idle game that seems to want to give you more, but you need to have the patience for it.

When it comes to the skill tree, however, it resembles Path of Exile quite a bit!

Well, I am not exactly the most patient of players, and if you want to skip all the extra details and get to the interesting parts, then this Hero Tale guide should give you all the tips and tricks you need to get started.

I've played the game a lot longer than I had expected, and in the meantime, I learned a thing or two about what makes it so unique - and fun, you could say. Since the game doesn't have a lot of features, as you could see in other RPGs, it stays pretty true to the basics. However, that only means that you need a solid understanding of the game in order to make the most of it.

So, if you want to have the best start possible, this Hero Tale guide should help you quite a bit.

We'll start with some basics and then move on to some more advanced tips, because if you are completely new, just like I used to be, you can use all the help you can get. First, we'll cover a levelling-up guide so you can level faster, and then we can talk about decent farming spots.

Finally, we'll wrap up this guide with some neat tips in regard to gear and skills. All builds are different, but don't worry - we'll help you pick something fit for your playstyle.

Without further ado, let's check out the Hero Tale guide and tips below!

Tip #1 - Hero Tale leveling guide: everything you need to know!

Battle in sewers

In order to level up quickly in Hero Tale, you need to start somewhere. In this case, it's in the sewers in the first couple of levels. You should try to fight off as many Rats as you can and farm EXP. These Rats only give you a little bit of EXP, but they attack extremely slowly, and they don't do a lot of damage.

Since the easiest way to level is to always fight enemies that you can take down as fast as possible, I recommend starting with the easiest one. It will take a while to level up, but it's still a lot faster than going back and forth to other enemies that could leave you with 1HP, then going back to heal and so on. When fighting lower-level enemies that give slightly less EXP but you can eliminate in an attack or two, it's a lot faster to level up. You could even leave your game idly farming, and you'll come back to a levelled-up character.

Tips for leveling up fast

Here are a few tips that can help you level up quickly:

  • You need to find mobs that you can kill in a reasonable time, that give decent EXP, and where you won't take a lot of damage.
  • If you're torn between a couple of grinding spots, simply check how long it takes you to kill one enemy, and how much EXP they give. Then, compare the spots, and pick the one with the most EXP gain and benefits.
  • Ideally, you need to find a spot where you can idle without dying. Once you find that (in the early game, it's the Rats, like I mentioned before), just stay there until you get a few levels under your belt.

Tip #2 - Know when to back down

Dialogue with Ezra

It's never a shame to back down from a fight you cannot take. When you're starting out and when you've just gotten your very first pieces of gear, you might think it's a good idea to go to a better spot and farm - but sometimes, that's not the case. Try to stick to a simple spot where you don't take so much damage, and where you can sustainably kill the mobs for extended periods of time.

That results in more EXP over time, and you won't be wasting any time trying to heal back up once you're dead or anything like that. If you attack an enemy and one hit takes half of your HP, then that's your cue to back away. Simply hit the white flag button ("surrender" flag) and go to the previous spot you were grinding.

I recommend you stay away from stronger enemies early on, at least until you get some decent gear and you can mitigate some of the damage dealt. In Hero Tale, you play the long game, or for the end game, not for immediate gratification - trust me, I learned that the hard way.

Tip #3 - Let's talk fish

Hero Tale inventory

Yeah, you heard me right. While some consider this "fishing" - rightfully so, I might add - you don't exactly go to a lake and dip your toes in the water. What I mean by this is that you will need to fight the Leviathan. This enemy will drop a lot of fish and other useful loot, and can even drop a pretty neat helmet.

Many players farm this boss for the helmet, but there are certain requirements if you plan on grinding here. In the best-case scenario, you want to have good defences. Be it a lot of defence and armour or a truckload of block, a few builds can deal with this. I recommend going for flat defence/armour, since that can fit most builds. Of course, if you already follow a build, stick to that.

Usually, to beat the Leviathan, you should have at least 2700 HP, 90 Combat, 100 Magic, 50 Defence. I followed a simple build that let me beat it, and it had the following gear:

  • Driada Casque
  • Elder Armor
  • Leafy Pants
  • Cultist Sabatons
  • Elder Shield
  • Flamberg

I also had a lot of potions in my inventory, but you can also try learning a healing spell to help you out.

What about fish?

As you probably know, Fish are an item dropped by the Leviathan - also, this item can heal you, so if you are running low on potions by any chance, you can use this to heal. Fish heals you for 36 HP, so it's not all that bad!

Tip #4 - Invest your points smartly

Hero Tale skill tree

Since you need a lot of levels for your character to shine through, you should always follow a dedicated build. You don't want to go ahead and add points to just about everything, because later on, it won't make sense. Try going for the bigger nodes in the skill tree, since that's where the real power comes from.

First and foremost, you should try to get Falcon Agility ASAP. This will make the biggest difference, because, by default, your attacks are REALLY slow. You need about 3 seconds to cast one attack, and that's honestly no fun. With Falcon Agility, you will get a lot of attack charge time reduced, and that's when you will start killing faster too.

Secondly, you need Armour. Armour will help you tank a lot more efficiently, and you can farm slightly weaker enemies without taking any damage. This means you can idle away and get EXP all the time. It goes hand-in-hand with progressing faster, so make sure you always prioritise these two.

Another good node you should go for is the Unnatural Recovery one, which will recover your HP a lot better. As a side note, it's also better when you die - you'll get back to 50% HP much faster! All in all, try to check out all the major nodes and determine the most efficient way to get them. You might not want to get all the nodes around them just yet - only once you have a few extra points.

Tip #5 - Gear up and get to fighting!

Hero Tale map

Gear is as important as your skills. The better your gear, the better enemies you can fight, and the less damage you will take. You won't have any special gear at the beginning, sadly, but once you farm some good ol' Rats, you will eventually be able to afford them.

You can sell your Rat Tails and then buy from Oscar's Shop some good beginner gear - just bear in mind that you'll need to fight quite a lot of Rats. I recommend you go for some armour, boots, pants and helmet first when you don't have anything equipped. After you get your very first few pieces of "noob" gear, then save for a better weapon.

With a better weapon, you can farm faster in the lower-level instances, and also take less damage. Try to farm for the gear I mentioned before (to fight Leviathan) in the Druid's Passage, Secret Orchard, and Woodfolk Circle, and you can get the Flamberg sword from the Pirate Captain in Pirate's Cove.

If these locations are a bit too difficult for you, just work your way up by levelling in lower-level spots. Or, if you have a different build that you follow and have some neat spots for the gear you need, go farm there!

All in all, just make sure you always have the best gear possible equipped, because even a little bit of extra armour or damage can make a huge difference.
