Sword of Convallaria hits five million downloads in its first week since launch
This JRPG throwback is super-popular
- Sword of Convallaria, the new JRPG from XD Entertainment, has already hit five million downloads
- Set in the town of Iria, it faithfully recreates the conventions of the JRPG genre
- Boasting gorgeous pixel graphics and grid-based combat, it's a must for any fan of the genre
Sword of Convallaria, the new JRPG from XD Entertainment (the folks behind Torchlight: Infinite) has already hit over five million downloads since its launch a week ago. To celebrate, the game will see a special log-in event taking place from August 9th to August 18th (EDT) where you can acquire ten of the Secret Fates resources.
While Sword of Convallaria received a decent review from us, we should always temper that with the acknowledgement that the JRPG genre can be a difficult one to get into. While separating it from Western RPGs may be contentious, it's undeniable that the two have vastly different genre conventions and mechanics.
In that way then, as we point out in our review, if you're looking for a solid JRPG adaptation on mobile then Sword of Convallaria with its retro graphics, grid-based combat and familiar classes will absolutely be what you're looking for. Just don't expect it to change your mind if you're dead-set against JRPGs.
Whatever your position on JRPGs, it's interesting to see a game like Convallaria prove so popular. You may remember when we were discussing Arknights: Endfield the other day that we posited fully 3D open-world RPGs would be the 'big' games going forward. But Sword of Convallaria seems to prove there's still a space for smaller-scale, aesthetically pleasing RPGs as well.
