Candy Crush Saga, the perennial champion of the match-3 genre, is now set to be the latest game making its way to alternative app stores. Publisher Flexion is bringing the hit puzzler to the Huawei App Gallery, Samsung Galaxy Store, Xiaomi GetApps and ONE store. This is all well and good for them, but what does it mean for us?
Well, longtime readers will know that alternative app stores have become a hot topic recently especially since Epic Games announced their intention to throw down the gauntlet at Apple and bring their own storefront to iOS in the EU (courtesy of recent legislative changes).
An alternative app store is exactly what it says on the tin, it's an app store that isn't one of the standards like the iOS App Store or Google Play. While in the past they've trailed behind, Candy Crush Saga making the jump to these stores demonstrates that now, even behind the scenes, they're becoming a force to be reckoned with.
Well, that's the big question. Apple has certainly not stopped trying to tighten the screws on apps using iOS, you need only look as far as their recent move to force even sites like Patreon to adopt their payment systems. I'd say it does smack of an attempt to reassert control after the Epic lawsuit ended up bringing a lot of scrutiny down on platform holders and blowing the gates wide open.
But, for now, I think we can expect business as usual - just more accessibility for those of you who prefer alternative storefronts.
