UFM: Ultimate Football Manager is the latest to try and capture the simple charm of the original

Sometimes you don't need glitzy graphics or even real teams

UFM: Ultimate Football Manager is the latest to try and capture the simple charm of the original
  • UFM: Ultimate Football Manager is an upcoming football sim
  • A throwback to the simple, 2D, numbers-focused action of old simulation games, it's sure to appeal to old-school players
  • But will the lack of real names and teams put some people off?

Ah football, the beautiful game. And that's not just on the pitch either, as it's also proven to be a major money spinner on virtually every gaming platform. But. of course, it's not the players people want to be, it's the managers. And if you've ever screamed at the TV in frustration and thought 'I can do better' then maybe you should prove it with UFM: Ultimate Football Manager.

This is football simulation at its very purest, and those of you who grew up with games like FIFA, or even the newer Football Manager games, might balk in horror at UFM. Only 2D action? An emphasis on simulation elements? No real teams or players?! Whereas for older readers these might all read more like selling points.

Yes, UFM is an unashamed throwback to the olden days of Football Manager and other sports sim. Where raw numbers, your reaction to events and game statistics are the focus. Is it for everyone? Absolutely not. But will some really find this exactly what they've been waiting for? Most definitely.

Of course, UFM is going to have heavy competition as the official Football Manager franchise has recently entered into a four-year deal with the UK Premier League. But it raises the question of just how important official branding really is compared to gameplay and accurate simulation of the beautiful game. We'll just have to see how well UFM is received.

In the meantime if you're looking for some top games to play, why not take a look at the latest entry in our regular feature of the top five new mobile games to try this week?

And if that's not enough, well, we'd be loathe not to point you to some of our more specific lists. How about the list of the top 10 best mobile games for fans of Minecraft, maybe?
