Apple names Hyper Light Drifter and Sky: Children of the Light the best iOS games of 2019
Sayonara Wild Hearts takes home 'Best Apple Arcade Game of the Year'
As is now something of a tradition, Apple has announced what it feels to be the best iOS apps and games of the year. Heart Machine's Hyper Light Drifter and thatgamecompany's Sky: Children of the Light have emerged victorious in what has been one of the best years for iOS gaming frankly ever.
I really can't question either of these picks too much. Sky: Children of the Light, which won 'Best iPhone Game of the Year', is a gorgeous title which has been supported consistently since launch with quality content. Dann reviewed it earlier this year, saying that it "transcends the standards of the platformer genre", before slapping a gold rating on it.
Hyper Light Drifter, while one of the best indies of all time, feels like an odd one to win considering it originally launched for PC all the way back in 2016. It was declared the 'Best iPad Game of the Year'. Jon reviewed the now-classic indie when it came to Switch last year, calling it "a neon-soaked, hyper-kinetic fever dream of an action-RPG with one of the most alluring game worlds of its kind". Just like Sky, Hyper Light Drifter earned a gold rating from us.
I suppose it might have been a bit questionable for the tech giant to award one of its own Apple Arcade titles "GOTY" status, and so that's likely why they've been divided up into their own little category. Sayonara Wild Hearts ultimately took home the title of 'Apple Arcade Game of the Year', despite some stiff competition from the likes of Mutazione, Neo Cab, and What the Golf?.
