Is Tencent close to releasing a mobile adaptation of Final Fantasy XIV?
And will it be exclusive to China?
- Final Fantasy XIV could be making its way to mobile soon
- But, say it with me, only in China; as Tencent are tipped to port the game
- However, there are additional wrinkles that may tip this story either way
Final Fantasy XIV could be coming to mobile. But before you go getting excited, here are the three words you don't want to hear: Only in China. That's because gaming giant Tencent is reportedly close to releasing a mobile version of the hit MMORPG, based on the long-running franchise.
As spotted by the folks over at MassivelyOP, Niko News were the first to hint at the game's release in one of their reports. Follow-up news came in the form of tweets by one of Niko's top analysts, Daniel Ahmad, who also commented that industry rumour indicates this will be a standalone game.
Now, we should add a caveat to what we said above because it gets slightly more complicated. Since Chinese publishers need approval to port foreign games, it's possible that a mobile version may already be in the works with Square Enix themselves, and is simply being adapted.
Either way, though, this is big news if true. Final Fantasy XIV clawed its way back from a disastrous launch to become one of the most well-loved MMORPGs of the modern age, taking fans to an entirely original setting of Eorzea. Bringing that game to mobile wouldn't just offer it a whole new lease of life, but also expose an entire new audience to the fan-favourite entry.
